On Oct. 3 and 4, 1987, New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut got whacked by an early-season snowfall.

Some parts of New York and western New England got between 18 inches and 21 inches, which would be a big snowfall any time of the year, let alone in early October.

I remember this storm, seeing as it was a day after my birthday. Also, for my Connecticut homies, it was the same day, although in 1979, of the Windsor Locks tornado. You get all kinds of weather in the Constitution State.

We didn’t get a ton of snow, maybe 3-4 inches. This was the first time I had ever driven in the snow and I drove down the Main Street in my hometown in my trusty 1982 Toyota Corolla hatchback, wishing I had put the sandbags near the wheel wells to counteract the rear-wheel drive.

And it was the earliest I had ever seen snow until I lived in northern Maine. Wasn’t quite August when the snow first started flying there, but it was in September. Oh, and mid-May.
