I’m not a football fan but I had the chance to interview Mike Ditka once, in June 2018 at a charity event on a warm summer Saturday afternoon. Actually, it was barely an interview. It was just Mike and me, sitting on the veranda in Aliquippa, talking, mostly about his growing up in Beaver County. I’ve talked to lots of famous people in my career and I didn’t know what to expect from him. I found him warm, engaging, funny.
After we stopped talking and shook hands, I got up to leave and he said, “let’s take a photo.” That wouldn’t be my idea. I don’t have any photos of me with anyone famous. It’s against my journalistic ethic, even if it makes me kind of boring. But you don’t tell Coach Ditka no, do you?
