My journalism training has helped me write anywhere. I mean, anywhere. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate when I get to write in out-of-the-way places.
One of those is an oceanfront. I’ve written along the shore on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, one side of the Pacific Ocean, and then along the Gulf Coast and two of the Great Lakes. This photo, along the coast of Massachusetts, was seven years ago today.
This wasn’t creative writing, to be sure. I was on vacation but had to cover breaking news, so I pulled over the car in Brant Rock, Massachusetts, and began to report and write. I didn’t bring my MacBook with me, because I didn’t plan to work as I drove around. But I did bring a portable keyboard with me and I had my iPhone.
So here I was.
Like I said, I don’t have to be in a gorgeous vista — or, in this case, a place of stark beauty — to write. There was absolutely no way anyone would have been able to tell I wrote at the ocean. It was just a typical, nondescript news story that took a few interviews.
But I remember!
I’ve written a lot along the ocean, although not while ON the ocean. I wonder that would be like, going from the East Coast to Europe. Bucket list, maybe? But I do appreciate looking at the ocean while I write.
Ironically, it’s not my favorite place to write. I have two places where I feel most creative and most at ease. Maybe I’ll write about them some day.
Where’s your favorite place to write?
